Perhaps one of the most exciting trends to hit the fitness scene in a really long time is the obstacle course craze. All over America, and many other countries are following suit, on any given month different types of obstacle courses are set up around different themes, and for different charities and events, but they center on solidarity and fitness. It's awesome.

Here's a list of some of the more popular ones which are gaining steam and traction on a monthly basis:

  • The Spartan Race
  • The Survival Race (family orientated)
  • The Warrior Dash
  • Tough Mudder
  • Military-focused obstacle courses
  • Local boot-camp style events

Facts & Figure

It's literally a fitness revolution taking place right under the nose of a population reeling under chronic nationwide obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. There are grassroots-style races going on at a local, national, and at times international level being held in modern countries all the time!

The whole thing basically got started (in the modern sense, because obstacle courses have technically been around forever) around five years ago in America. Since then it's gone from a minor movement to generating literally hundreds of millions of dollars worth of profit in 2012.

This also goes for all the charities that people compete for. It's hard to find exact numbers, but it must be huge. Racers, visitors, the audience, and everyone pitches in around a cause and celebrate fitness and physical training simultaneously.

A New Impetus for Conditioning

Instead of hitting the gym everyday to look sexy, or even to avoid getting sick, how about training really hard so you can win the Spartan race? Or perhaps beat your last time? Or be an even more powerful member of a team? Earn tons of money for your favorite charity? Or because you absolutely adore the close-knit and ever enthusiastic obstacle course community?

  • No matter which course people are competing on, it's typically different, and in a different place. They provide new obstacles, fresh challenges, and for more excitement than your average every day gym experience.
  • The camaraderie and positive motivational attitudes of competitors and onlookers is intoxicating. Much more so than droning away listening to headphones on the treadmill.
  • For many people it feels like a safe and secure form of battle. Afterwards people feel rejuvenated in ways that the modern corporate gym industry hasn't offered.
  • The skills required to overcome courses, especially in teams and competing, are for more engaging than being able to max out on a barbell chest press, or upping the weight on squats.
  • They promote a sense of community, family strength, civic outreach, healthy competition, fitness, human excellence, and local fundraising.

They stretch across each and every demographic and both young and old come and join the fun. Check out which ones are happening near you and go get some!
